The patent application reveals the use of an additional layer of glass on top of the home button which would add to the looks of the phone and help protect the components inside the fingerprint scanner. Apple uses sapphire glass for its Touch ID to protect the embedded technology inside its home button.
Last month, we passed along speculation that the Xiaomi Mi 5 would be unveiled in the fourth quarter of this year. Currently, Xiaomi does not offer a model that employs a fingerprint scanner. By obtaining a patent for its own design, Xiaomi won't have to license the technology from a third party.

The Xiaomi Mi 5 is expected to come equipped with a 5.2-inch screen with a 1440 x 2560 (QHD) resolution. That combination provides a pixel density of 565ppi. A quad-core 2.7GHz Snapdsragon 805 CPU is believed to be under the hood with the Adreno 420 GPU handling graphics. 3GB of RAM is supposedly inside with 16GB/64GB of native storage on board. Back and front-facing cameras will weigh in at 16MP and 8MP respectively, and a 3600mAh battery will keep the lights on.
